| The campaign to oppose any plans for a marina at Swanbourne was enthusiastically launched on Tue evening 19 June with a record attendance of 90 Swanbourne residents and community members of surrounding suburbs. The meeting voted unanimously in favour of a formation of an action group to continue the campaign and contribute to the conservation of the coast. |
Following ongoing and persistent rumours of plans for a marina at Swanbourne Beach, an historic public meeting was held Tue evening 19 June at the Swanbourne Surflife Saving Club. A spectacular show of support for the 'NO MARINA at Swanbourne' campaign was clearly demonstrated with 90 people attending from Swanbourne, Cottesloe and the wider Nedlands area.
Four speakers, Lesley Shaw, Tim Tucak, Jean-Paul Orsini and Andrew Sullivan addressed the crowd to explain the urgency of the situation and to go over why Swanbourne was in no way a suitable site for a marina. An open question time followed with overwhelming support for the formation of an action group.
Three motion were unanimously adopted by a show of hands:
Motion 1: That the residents of Swanbourne oppose any plans to build a marina at Swanbourne Beach or its vicinity.
Motion 2: That a group be formalised as an incorporated Association to defend the interests of Swanbourne residents and become a vehicle to serve the broader needs of the Nedlands community.
Motion 3: That members of the inaugural committee be elected with a mandate to proceed with the incorporation, define the name and the objects of the association, and form the first Association Committee.
A total of 12 people were nominated by an enthusiastic crowd to form the inaugural committee. A petition was signed by the attendees and will be posted in many prominent areas in Nedlands and Cottesloe. |
