| In the light of several contradictory media statement by Alannah MacTiernan, Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, about a new marina in Swanbourne, SOS SWANBOURNE calls upon the Minister to clarify her position and tell the community what the real story is. |
A recent Media Statement by Alannah MacTiernan Planning Minister on the newly-released Perth Recreational Boating Study makes no mention of Swanbourne Beach as a possible site for a marina.
The study, that identifies Perth's future boating facilities, clearly indicates that Swanbourne is not on the radar for a new marina development. Indeed none of the criteria identified for a marina development are met in Swanbourne:
• the availability of natural protection from storm conditions (shelter from both wind and
waves);
• safe access to near-shore sheltered waters as well as a safe route to the open sea;
• the availability of adequate water depths (including lack of submerged hazards);
• the proximity to desirable boating destinations;
• the proximity to centres of present and future populations;
• the compatibility of adjacent land uses and
• environmental compatibility
Further, the draft Perth Coastal Planning Strategy, in its final stages before release, also gives no indication that Swanbourne could be a potential site for a marina. A community workshop held on 26 May at AQWA by the Department of Planning and Infrastructure did not consider Swanbourne as a potential site amongst the seven sites considered during the workshop along the Perth coast north of the river.
Given that the Minister has said publicly several times in the last three months that a marina in Swanbourne 'should be given serious consideration' (see Boating WA Media Release dated 5 Mar and interview on Channel 9 news of 25 May), the Minister is putting out conflicting signals to the public and undermining her own department's work on the Perth coastal strategy.
In the light of growing community opposition to a marina in Swanbourne, SOS SWANBOURNE calls upon the Minister to put to rest community concern and clearly state what her position is.

PS you can see on the photo below the impact a marina in Swanbourne would have on the coastline and on access to public beaches.
