Tonight DIAC have announced that the Sri Lankan asylum seekers on Christmas Island may be given mobile phones.
While this is cause for rejoicing at face value, things are not always what they seem.
There are no mobile phones on Christmas Island-they have to be purchased on the mainland.
A local CX islander tells me that detainees can’t register the phones so an Australian has to purchase and register in the Australian’s name.
Currently the phone number advertised on the web is not working . Also there is only one landline phone for 83 +people.
However these grumbles aside at last they can seek support.
If anyone wishes to donate a GSM TELSTRA PHONE- prepaid plus 10 dollars credit please email.
The Man transferred to Perth on Medical grounds has been able to speak to relatives in Australia tonight.
After two weeks and one day- incommunicado detention is over.
