| Australia's most recognisable indigenous personalities, comedian Ernie Dingo, attacked the Queensland Government today for treating his people like children. Dingo spoke in Brisbane as protests were held over the death in custody of Palm Island man Mulrunji Doomadgee. Mr Mulrunji, 36, died in a police cell on Palm Island after his arrest for public drunkenness in 2004... |
"If you have authority, you tread on those below you. You shouldn't do that, it's just like having children and raising them, and that's what the Government's doing with the Aborigine. They think we are children and try to treat us as such. They have to realise it's the oldest culture in the world," said Mr Dingo.
Dingo spoke in Brisbane as protests were held over the death in custody of Palm Island man Mulrunji Doomadgee.
Protests were also held in Townsville, Melbourne, Cairns and Palm Island over Director of Public Prosecutions Leanne Clare's decision not to charge Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley over Mr Mulrunji's death.
Despite state Deputy Coroner Christine Clement's ruling in September this year that Mr Mulrunji's fatal injuries were caused by Snr Sgt Hurley, Ms Clare last week said there was not enough evidence to support criminal charges.
More than 1000 people attended the Brisbane CBD rally before marching to state parliament. Dingo, a presenter on Channel 7's travel show The Great Outdoors, said it was important for people to get together to discuss deaths in custody.
"We've had 200 years of bad policy, things have not worked well, sooner or later we've got to think of the future of that community," Qld Premier Beattie said on ABC radio. "That's why I'm going there to try and, I guess with as much good will as I can, build a new future, have a fresh start.
He promised to release legal advice shortly about why it was unwise for someone else to conduct a judicial review of Ms Clare's decision. "In the end the people who would have to pursue the charges are the exact same people who have made a determination not to do so," he said. He also declined to intervene in the decision. |
