________________________________________________________
Well, as you know, logging has begun in Palmer.
We previously negotiated with *Forest Products Commission *(FPC) etc that they would inform us at each stage prior to *work commencing*.
They left a message on Ken’s answering machine at 7.30pm Sunday evening stating that ‘work would probably begin sometime this week’. FPC contractors came in Monday morning and began ‘harvesting’.
It was also negotiated for conservationists (Collie Conservation Group, Palmer Forest Rescue Camp etc) to meet with the fellers prior to work commencing as an opportunity to meet, develop a relationship, and discuss concerns (from both sides) etc. This did not occur.
As you are aware, conservationists have been meeting with Judy Edwards and her staff members. During this process conservationists have raised the fact that Judy had previously been opposed to the logging of Palmer, and requested clarification on her position and its apparent hypocrisy. Judy had also stated that she would look into the possibility of extending the Fauna Habitat Zone significantly. We were also under the impression that these concerns would be addressed prior to the commencement of logging, and that another meeting would take place.
Well, technically they did address our concerns prior to logging, as Ross Field (Chief of Staff) sent an email to one person at 7pm Friday evening outlining amongst other things, their position on the impacts of logging on stream salinity – basically that they now believe that the impact is minimal.
If you would like a copy of this email response then please let me know and I will email it to you.
Two fellers began logging on Monday the 24th at 10.30am using chainsaws to cut down trees in the corridor right along side of the Fauna Habitat Zone (which now makes the possibility of the extension of the Fauna Habitat Zone impossible). They covered an area of about two hectares by 3pm, felling over 100 trees (approximately). I sent some pictures of this to you on Monday afternoon. Tuesday was much the same.
I have attached some photos from yesterday. They have not been working today (Wednesday) as far as we can tell.
What we have noticed is the incredible *waste*. Each tree is between 10 and 15 metres and they have cut them in such a way where they will only use / take 2 to 3 metres. Felled trees are falling on to other trees still standing, destroying them in the process, including trees previously marked as habitat or retention (with the markings scraped off).
Many logs have also split due to the way they have been felled, making them unusable in the mills. In addition, due to the wet conditions, many of the felled logs are full of sap and will spilt as they dry, reducing the timber quality. It is also of concern that the logs will remain on the ground for sometime (until the soil is dry enough under the soil management guidelines), with the timber quality deteriorating as they lay there.
There are a few of us at camp at the moment, keeping an eye on things and recording the destruction. There are also people in the city working on things from up there.
