To carry out the tests many Maralinga, Pitjantjatjara and Kokatha people were forcibly removed from their homeland by ‘Aboriginal Protectors’, continuing the dispossession and genocide that began with European invasion..." IRANTI WANTI As the Federal Government considers selling uranium to India the Australian Conservation Foundation said this week’s 50th anniversary of nuclear weapons tests at Maralinga in South Australia was a sobering warning about the damage that inevitably accompanies nuclear adventurism. 50 years later, the legacy of Maralinga remains. [ Australian Conservation Foundation ] During the British/Australian nuclear testing campaign four 'Buffalo' tests were conducted at Maralinga in September and October 1956, and three 'Antler' explosions were detonated there the following year. Each of these explosions generated considerable radioactivity, by means of the initial nuclear reaction and the through dispersion of radioactive particulate colloquially known as 'fallout'. In addition to British scientific and military personnel, thousands of Australians were exposed to radiation produced by the tests. These included not only those involved in supporting the British testing program, but also Aboriginal people living downwind of the test sites, and other Australians more distant who came into contact with airborne radioactivity.
