Up Yours HOWARD! - National Student Walkout Against Workchoices: Thurs June 1 - 1pm, Murray St Mall
DEFEND OUR RIGHTS / CONFRONT HOWARD! No more Finger Lickin' Greed: NO AWAs, Supersize Our Pay.
Here in Australia most young workers need to work around their student commitments in order to make ends meet, and they work casual, low-paid jobs in industries with low levels of union membership.
Australian Workplace Agreements will force young people, who are generally in a weak bargaining position, to negotiate with their boss on an individual basis.
New research shows that less than 1 in 5 young people believe they will be better off individually negotiating their pay and conditions with their bosses. The majority surveyed thought they'd be better off under an award.
Consequently students in Australia should take from the example of France, where they led millions of workers to victory in the fight against the First Employment Contract law, which was a major attack on the rights of young workers. Most young people didn't even vote for Howard and now they are suffering with ambitious bosses undermining their rights.
