You are encouraged to contact us to be part of the Editorial Collective. To join the editorial crew, or find out more: to the Editorial group email list info page.
And we are here to help you. Just ask! To contact the Perth Indymedia EDITORIAL COLLECTIVE:Perth IMC editorial group email list We should reply within 24 hours. Or phone a perth indymedia editor on 0402 573 580 - only if very urgent!
Perth Indymedia Editorial Aims and Objectives
* To provide an OPEN PUBLISHING newswire in accordance with general and specific INDYMEDIA policies and philosophy.
* News Access: To maintain, develop and promote Perth Indymedia as a web space that welcomes and encourages members of disempowered, displaced marginalised groups and communities to create and consume activist news media.
* Media Outlet: To facilitate the consumption and dissemination of radical news media and critical art from a radical perspective. And to provide awareness and documentation of activism in the general Perth and WA region.
* Speech: We acknowledge that words have the power to cause potential injury, but also that instances of injurious speech or writing can also be seen as necessary opportunities for a critical or insurrectionary response.
* Credibility: To preserve the overall quality of the website as a useful, credible and participatory media resource. To allow passionate truth-tellings without fear.
Newswire/Features Protocol
Perth IMC hosts an OPEN PUBLISHING newswire. Where you are invited to openly publish your own media amongst a pool of others - and to make comment.
Members of the editorial collective regularly monitor the contributor-based newswires, seeking significant, active and informative articles for the front page centre-column Feature section.
We love to Featurise local Perth, WA, regional, national or any global stories written by YOU. We encourage YOU to be the media, for YOU to be the Journalist.
Anyone can publish.
This is your media centre. Used by grass-roots activists, community groups and individuals to publish their Media Releases, announcements, events etc. Please go here to publish your stuff on Perth Indy.
If you want to see a certain issue covered on the front page centre, please let us know by emailing the editorial crew: Perth IMC editorial group email list. Better still - publish it yourself in the Newswires and we can make it into a feature...
Open Publishing Open publishing is a transparent process of creating media content. Consumers can contribute a story and see it appear in the pool of stories publicly available. They can comment and discuss aspects of the content. Stories are filtered as little as possible.
Readers can see editorial decisions being made by others. They can see how to get involved and help make editorial decisions. They can see why and how decisions are made. They can participate. They can choose to be part of the editorial collective. This is participatory activist media.
Long before the blog revolution, Indymedia Open publishing software allowed anyone with internet access to upload media content directly, to share activist news and perspectives - without having to penetrate the corporate filters of mainstream media.
Fundamental principles enable the organisation of open publishing. These principles include an agreed anti-hierarchial approach, transparent public participation, and minimal editorial control.

EDITORIAL GUIDELIES
RESPECT: Please Do Not Tease the Lions or Feed the Trolls Wikipedia defines an Internet Troll as: either a person who sends messages on the Internet hoping to entice other users into angry or fruitless responses, or a message sent by such a person. See: Internet Troll - Wikipedia
Perth Indymedia strives to provide both a grassroots media resource and a forum for people to contribute meaningful and respectful discussion of local, regional and global events and activist issues. Please, when posting comments, be respectful of others and ignore those trying to interrupt or discourage meaningful discourse.
Hiding Posts
In an effort to maintain clarity and integrity of this media commons the Editorial crew may occasionally HIDE newswire contributions, if the content contravenes the guidelines set out below.
Sometimes we may hide (meaning not in default view) some posts which we feel are breaching certain guidelines. All hidden posts - exceptions noted below - are immediately notified to the Editorial collective email list so that the crew have a chance to agree/disagree and discuss their actions.
Hidden Comments can also be viewed by clicking on the Show hidden comments link at the top of each article.
Notifiable Removals
* Posts the author has requested be hidden.
* Posts a family or close community member wishes removed.
* Blatant political advertising - in accordance with Indymedia protocols.
* Posts which are obviously incorrect or misleading. This includes attempts to spread disinformation or to impersonate another individual. It is an abuse of the publish feature to deliberately misinform others.
* Posts that incite or are threats of violence against disempowered members of the community.
* Threats to maim or kill.
* Posts which publish identifying information without the individuals knowledge or consent.
* Posts which use language, imagery, or other forms of communication to promote racism, fascism, xenophobia, homophobia, sexism etc - or any other form of discrimination.
* Persistent nuisance posts to the newswire or comments sections.
* Posts that are deemed to be devoid of content or analysis and appear to be published with the sole purpose of disruption or intimidation.
* Abuse of others in the form of personal attacks. Indymedia is NOT a space for people to play out personal vendettas. Trolls are NOT welcome.
* Obvious pornography, but not sexually explicit satire.
Note: The Editorial collective may choose to hide (or in extreme cases - delete) posts which publish personal identifying information without others consent. Please let us know if you think this has happened. Contact: Perth IMC Eds
In accordance with these guidelines we may also remove content which may be deemed as defamatory, libel or deliberately hostile. There are also issues with stories commenting on Sub Judice criminal cases. Please see our Legal Issues wiki page for more details
Non-notifiable Removals
* Unreadable formats for eg: photos posted as text or text-only posts without relevance. ie: nonsense/flooding.
* Duplicate/Repetitive/Spam/Noise posts.
* Advertising of products or for-profit services.
* Notification or cancellation of events. Please use the action calendar. These may be moved to appropriate wire.
* We may also move items to appropriate wires for easier clarity - eg a Global story may be transferred to the International Wire, or a Regional item to the Regional Wire.
Hidden Articles
Hidden Articles can be viewed in the Hidden Wire.
Hidden COMMENTS can also be viewed by clicking on the link at the top of each article.
PLEASE NOTE: Repeat Abuse and Hostile Attacks:
As a general rule of thumb, Indymedia sites do not keep IP logs. However, in an effort to maintain integrity and clarity, in extreme instances and with consensus of more than 2 members of the editorial-group, repetitive abuses of this editorial policy may result in temporarily disabled usage of perth.indymedia.org. (ie - You may be temporarily banned/blocked. We will block your IP address.) The above point is under constant discussion and definition with the Edirorial Crew and we will rarely resort to this extreme. Be nice!
MAKING EDITORIAL COMMENTS: If an editor makes a comment on behalf of the collective they should: Identify themselves as member of the Editorial Collective. At all times be diplomatic, and represent the collective in a respectful manner. An editor will attempt to identify the specific part of the Editorial Policy when asked to justify an action. We also notify the Editorial Email list immediately regarding any editorial comments made on behalf of the collective.
If you do not agree with a decision:
Make a comment in the appropriate wire or for further information please email us.
To contact the Perth Indymedia EDITORIAL COLLECTIVE: Click here: Perth IMC editorial group email list
We strive to make decisions in the most open, transparent and accountable manner possible. If you have ANY questions or concerns regarding this editorial policy or our practices - or better still - would like to work with the Perth IMC, please contact Perth IMC list.

Copyright of Features and Articles
All posts made to the newswire are effectively covered by the principles of COPYLEFT. Features can be used anywhere by anyone for free.
What is Copyleft?.
Basically the author retains the moral right to be recognised as the author of the article in question, but the article is free for distribution for non-profit and educative purposes.

Articles may be reproduced in full for any purpose and in any media provided the reproduction is subject to the same principles as laid out here, that is, the same representations of the COPYLEFT of the article must appear alongside the article.
Under no circumstances may articles or features from the Perth IMC site be reproduced in full in a fee-paying or for-profit medium.
However, for-profit media may quote from articles or features in accordance with Australian Fair Use copyright principles. We ask that you recognise your sources.
Specific queries about reproduction of an article or feature can be referred to the editorial collective: Email us!
REPOSTING MEDIA FROM ELSEWHERE
The majority of reposted news stories (media from elsewhere) are mostly copyright protected. Please be aware of copyright infringement and plagiarism issues when rampant cutting and posting of regurgitated corporate media to the newswires.
Please only use reposted stories to quote from - or to illustrate/exemplify your own articles - or to alert others of significant events not covered widely in mainscream pop-culture speed news media.
We generally discourage outright corporate repostings. We prefer an introduction as to why its necessary to regurgitate the mainstream, and for Perth Indymedia contributors to think and create media for their own community - and for the global indymedia network.
We also dont want any more letters from copyright lawyers.
Dont regurgitate the media - Recreate the media!

Culture Jamming is fine...
RESPONSIBILITY of the Random Radical Individual - a Disclaimer!
This IMC is an interactive media website offering open and inclusive community participation via open publishing.
As such, ALL postings to the open publishing newswires are deemed the responsibility of the individual authors and NOT of any individual member of the editorial collective or the general Perth IMC community, in any way whatsoever.
As a rule, Indymedia websites do not keep IP addresses - unless under attack. In other words, we have no idea who posts to this site, so dont blame us for whats posted.
Although, as IMC volunteers, we will attempt to ensure accuracy and clarity of the newswire, we take no responsibility whatsoever in any way - legal or otherwise for any of the contents of the open publishing site. Alright?
Mention of external web sites or services is for information purposes only and constitutes neither an endorsement nor a recommendation by the individuals of the collective.
PLEASE dont hassle us out brothers and sisters.
But let us help you! Mutual aid baby!
Feel free to email the editorial collective whenever you want whenevr you like if you want to discuss anything about the contents on perth.indymedia.org or want to get involved with the crew...
Tips for writing
- adapted from various indymedia sources.

Check out Wiki News as another open, participatory, neutral news service on the web. Myriad advice and information about newswriting style there. See Wiki News
Writing For Indymedia: Choose a story that will be of interest to the readers of indymedia. This can include looking at mainstream media current events from a different angle, but also at what they are not covering.
We like to read radical perspectives.
Try to write the article so that it flows in obvious direction. This is especially important for web based writings, as people will want to be able to scroll through the article quickly, scanning, absorbing the main points without wasting too much time.
To help do this it is important to group similar points and ideas of the story together. Build a structure where each point follows on and builds from the previous one, in a logical progression.

Start your article with a summary introducing the main ideas, their causes and effects. Remember that this first part is all many visitors to the site will see as they scroll through the newswire, so try to make it concise and to the point. After this, using a new paragraph for each main idea makes for an easier to read item.
After the intro, give some background information on the topic, to place it in context for those people who may not know anything about it. This will make the later details easier to understand.
Each further paragraph can expand upon the main points given in the introduction. Your writing will be more believable if you separate the facts you are presenting from your own analysis and opinions. You are writing for an open news-site. By keeping your own ideas towards the end of the piece, it can be more inviting for the readers to submit their own comments.

Choose the most relevant indymedia site and newswire category to submit your story to - it defeats the purpose of having regional sites if they all contain the same stories.
The Global Indymediasite has been set up for stories which are most relevant to a worldwide audience.
Also see the Oceania Indymedia hub: Oceania Indymedia is a collection of regional IMCs.
Insurrection and Sedition
Activist Media and Media Activism: Please remember that not everyone who logs onto activist websites is sympathetic to your cause of social justice. Police, ASIO, corporate lawyers, media monitors and other security forces (even overseas) also read these stories, and take into account the content when working out counter-measures.

Sometimes it is best to discuss your plans and observations through more traditional channels. Particularly in relation to acts of Civil Disobedience.
Whilst Indymedia sites do not as a rule collect IP addresses, please remember that when posting your media it is always possible to trace both the computer and the email address back to their owners.
However, it is possible to avoid this by using an internet cafe or library, and posting your stories to the indymedia site from there, rather than your home or work machine.
(geek hacker note: to be really anonymous, you need to use something like tor in addition to protocol level anonymisers - see http://tor.eff.org)
Also when documenting actions, please consider the subject of photos. It is considered good etiquette to seek permission from members of the public - especially activists involved with civil disobedience - when capturing images.
Let the person know you intend to upload them to an internet site.
We ask that you bear these things in mind when writing and publishing articles to an Indymedia website.

Thanks for contributing. We are all in this together

Mission Statement
Indymedia and Open Publishing emerged from the clouds of tear gas that filled the streets of Seattle in 1999 as a tool for the creation of radical, accurate, and passionate tellings of truth.
Then and now, the stories told through Indymedia come from the hearts and minds of people on the frontlines of the struggle for justice against tyranny.
Since 1999, Indymedia has grown into a network of more than 200 Independent Media Centers (IMCs) all over the world by means of a commitment to equality, decentralization and autonomy.
Perth Indymedia is an autonomous member of the Independent Media Center network with a focus on local issues and the direct impact of larger issues on our community. Perth Indymedia is not a membership organization; it is a tactic, a concept, and a movement that can be effectively utilized in many different ways...
