| Following a media release by Boating WA on 3 March and a recent evening news item on Channel 9 on Friday 18 May, where backbencher Bob Kucera and Planning Minister Alannah McTiernan appeared to support the idea of a large marina at Swanbourne Beach (the size of Hillarys Boat Harbour), the action group SOS Swanbourne, a community group of local residents, wish to proclaim their total opposition to locating a marina on their local beach. |
PRESS RELEASE – 21 MAY 2007
COMMUNITY REJECTS IDEA OF A MARINA FOR SWANBOURNE
SOS SWANBOURNE, a recently-formed group of concerned Swanbourne residents, fully supports the Nedlands Council in rejecting any idea of a marina development at Swanbourne (see council minutes dated 13 March 2007). SOS SWANBOURNE urges Nedlands councillors to continue supporting the local community on this issue.
The Australian Government Department of Defence also opposes the location of a marina at Swanbourne, that would encroach into the buffer zone around the Campbell Barracks housing the SAS Regiment.
SOS SWANBOURNE believes that locating a full-scale marina at Swanbourne Beach, a development that could be as big as Hillarys Boat Harbour, would irretrievably damage the character of the small Swanbourne coastal community and is totally out of place for the area.
Further, such a development would gravely damage the local environment, resulting in extensive clearing of coastal bushland and disruption to marine coastal processes, potentially putting at risk the iconic Cottesloe Beach.
A more suitable site for such a development would be Rous Head in North Fremantle where infrastructure and public access are already provided.
Any plan of locating a marina at Swanbourne Beach will be fiercely opposed by the local community.
In the light of the CCC investigations into recent scandals to do with the Coogee Marina and the Smith Beach development, with allegations of corrupt dealings between lobbyists, local government elected members and developers, we would like to urge anyone supporting a marina in Swanbourne to come clean about potential vested interests and links with lobbyists or developers.
SOS SWANBOURNE urges the public to register their opposition to this proposal by visiting its blog: http://sos-swanbourne.typepad.com/.
