I admire your convictions Mar ;) Including your number shows commitment and dedication to your work.
This is no small thing people!
Consider that most people don't even use their real name when they post. Mar uses his real name, holds no punches, speaks what he considers is the truth and then includes his phone number!
That's a FULL-TIME commitment to his work ;)
That is no small thing!!
All I can say is WOW!
WOW!
:)
Do you fear retribution for speaking your mind, for speaking up? Well consider Mars' post and see that he is still alive and well.
Mar you are a guiding light man!

Pointless protest needs an angle |

Dateline Perth 14th April 2006.
A handful of protestors gathered out the front of the Perth Immigration Detention Centre today.
The protestors chanted anti imigration slogans and listened to boring repetive speeches. The protesters who consisted of the usual ol rent a crowd of groups and individuals then presented a list of demands to Immigration minister, Amanda Vandstone via Detention centre manangement via a Chubb security guard.
The clasical staged photograph of a four year old child carrying a sign with the slogan "Free the Refugee's" was taken, the socialists badgered high school girls into joing them, the communists attempted to sell newspapers and the anarchists stood around doing nothing while blaming everyone else and God.
When television crews eventually turned up the mob were egged on by the producers to create a bit of argy bargy with the cops. Once the television crews left the crowd dispersed and everyone went home to there nice houses with electricity and running water.

hey, media - thats a bit below the belt isn't it? Its true, but sometimes the truth doesn't need to be stated when its obvious... The violence theme is a new angle to get people involved but this is because this year, more so than any other annual refugee rights convergences, there is the perception (whether its true or not, thats another story!) that there is no real point to it but for 'something to do'. Baxter and Port Hedland were quite different and needed to be 'exposed' to the public via convergences but villawood? Its not the same

There's a million reasons to protest |

For those who think its pointless to deissent against the government. The Point is:
At the very basic level - We are protesting against the fact that the Australian government puts refugees and their children in jail, indefinately and without trial or charge.
This is wrong.
That is the point. Get it?

So a bunch of protesters attempting to get the truth out about the mistreatment of refugess is boring ? Yet the propaganda merchants that "create" news for their networks isn't ?
Or do you hold those who have stood up for what they belive in in such contempt that you degrade them with your bullshit spiel ? So what would you prefer them to do ? Spend the weekend in an orgy of festivities while driving their gas guzzling 4x4's ignoring completetly shit that is going down in the world ?
At least they acknowledge even just for a moment that there are those less fortunate in the world. I am sure though that at varying times and in fact the majority of the time these thoughts are with them. They don't take for granted that they CAN go home to running water and electricity.
Oh yes I'll acknowledge I have given people shit on this forum for not looking at the big picture or even ignoring it and protesting against things that really aren't going to make a difference in the scheme of things. But fact is at least they are making the effort and are taking the time to be a "voice" for those that would be ignored otherwise.
Nothing better to do ? I think not.

Big Picture vs Real People |

Direct action saves lives. Not only do the actions of refugee rights advocates assist in channelling information from inside to outside these centres, the constant protest keeps the governments hideous agenda in the media.
There are folks inside Perth IDC that have been saved from deprtation because of the actions of passionate refugee rights activism.
Making angry comments on an indymedia site is hardly a way to facilitate change.
Trolls can fuck right off.

Yeah yeah yeah. O.k. that is true. I'm just suggesting that people who do happen to be reading MSN news, people who don't care who owns it, are reading about the actions.
This must be a good thing.

What the fuck are you taking? Your doctor needs help. Nothing remotely resembling your post happened, nor was it planned.
Why do you feel the need to create such a fantasy?
No one chanted slogans. The people who turned up are the people who know that chanting slogans is pointless. Though why someone who was supportive of refugee rights would chant anti-immigration slogans is a bit of a mystery, unless, media, you couldn't be bothered typing Department. Even then, you were wrong.
Not a single speech was made at the vigil.
The only photos were taken by me, and there were no children there.
There were no socialists there, nor any high school girls. Most us were middle-aged men.
There was no argy-bargy. The cops were actually polite, even the State Security Squad.
There were no TV crews.
I think the only two words in your post that have any connection with humans and planet earth were 'the' and 'and'.
I could be wrong, but then I only spent the entire time there. You saw all these things while I was going to the toilet.

Hey
media
The big trouble with your post is that I've been an activist for 28 years and I've still never found the office for Rent A Crowd (maybe I'm too stupid to look in the Yellow Pages). I've been ripped off big time. As you clearly know who Rent A Crowd are, please give me their address, cos they owe me, big time. Here I am working away as a freelance editor and proofreader, when I could be getting big money for protesting.
Let me know who has been denying my right to the award wage for protesting.

Ummm I think I was trying to acknowledge that I was in fact wrong and was voicing my support to those that were making an effort. You may believe stating that ignoring the big picture is a mistake is copletely misguided but calling me a troll and telling me to fuck off ? Ok.

There was actually a guy I worked for in South Australia many years ago who had a business called: "Rent-a-crowd". I can't remember what the business was...
But yeah - what is the award rate for protesting? Can I claim for unfair dismissal?
By the way good onya Mar for doing the distance.
