PROTESTS AGAINST DETENTION WILL GO AHEAD THIS EASTER |
| by azadiiii |
2006-04-12 2:50 AM +0800 |
| We should not let this circumstance deter us from protesting this Easter weekend. If we do, well, then the govt has put one over on us!! |
This from RAC - NSW
Last night after the RAC meeting and an Education
Action Group filmnight at Sydney Uni, around 40 people
protested at Villawood. At first we were at the front
visitors gate fearing detainees would be moved last
night. We moved to Miowera Rd which is close to the
detainees' compounds. There was a lot of visual and
audio interaction between us and the detainees.
Unfortunately they are being moved now, while we are
all at work. Some of the press are saying that the
convergence is cancelled, but...
PROTESTS AGAINST DETENTION WILL GO AHEAD THIS EASTER:
Amanda Vanstone is using the pretext of asbestos to
move all detainees out of Villawood, the majority to
Holsworthy Army Barracks, with a further 60 to Baxter
and 14 to Long Bay Jail.
Keep coming to racnsw.net.au and www.no-id2006.org for
regular updates. A rough itinerary below, it's
suggested we be more mobile over the weekend.
It means less camping and more billeting. However,
note that we will be camping on Friday night at least.
If you are Sydney-based and can billet (or are from
interstate and need billeting) please call John on
0409777173
Thursday 13th April: Anyone who can make it should
come to the final planning meeting at the UTS
Students' Association Thursday at 6pm.
Some suggestions for action include: Holsworthy; DIMA;
Kirribilli House;
Suggestions for festival include: Villawood; DIMA;
Kirribilli.
Friday 14 April: We are still meeting outside the UTS
Tower on Good Friday morning at 10.30am. A decision
was made last night to still converge on Campbell Hill
Pioneer Reserve (10 mins walk from Villawood) by
12.30pm.
After an afternoon of actions around the detention
centre, we can use our campsite as a space to organise
the rest of the weekend.
Saturday 15th April: AM - Protest actions (location to
be decided.)
PM: We are definitely holding the multicultural
festival on Saturday afternoon from 3-9pm, though the
location is to be decided.
Sunday: AM A protest has been suggested for Kirribilli
House, asking peace groups to join in for a general
protest against the Howard that links the scandal of
mandatory detention to that of AWB.
PM: We still intend to go ahead with the planned
conference, though the location will change. |

Easter protests will go ahead |

MEDIA RELEASE Easter protests will go ahead
Villawood detainees protest at relocation. Refugee supporters say release the detainees.
A statement signed by three detainees has threatened hunger strike protests against any attempt to remove them from Villawood detention centre. Reports from inside Villawood, where a meeting is only now being held with detainees (5.00pm, Monday) indicates that many detainees are fearful and angry about the Minister’s announcement that they will be moved tomorrow. (Text of letter sent Minister Vanstone below).
One detainee told the Refugee Action Coalition that people are very fearful of being sent to Baxter detention centre in South Australia. “Many people will protest,” they said.
Refugee supporters have called on the Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone to release the detainees, not relocate them.
“Asbestos or no asbestos, Villawood is a toxic site that should be closed. Detention has already damaged so many people and now the possibility of asbestosis hangs over their future,” said Ian Rintoul spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition.
“It is a perfect opportunity for the Minister to release the detainees rather than relocate them in other detention facilities that can only add to their anxiety.
“The minister has said that all detainees will be returned to Villawood, but there is little confidence among the detainees or refugee supporters that the government can be trusted to keep their word. Removing detainees from Villawood will make public scrutiny of the government’s treatment of detainees that much harder,” said Ian Rintoul.
“It is typical that the government would hold a press conference to announce the relocation of the detainees before they even discussed the issue with the detainees themselves. If the Minister was really concerned about the welfare of the detainees in her care, she would have talked to the detainees first about this issue was going to be managed. This is a classic piece of damage control that may well make things worse.
“The timing of the government’s announcement, just days before a planned Easter weekend of protest action, is also suspicious. But we can assure the government that the protests will go ahead. The protest action by detainees may well mean that people are still behind the wire at Villawood.”
“The government’s announced review of asylum process for West Papuans has shown that the government has no serious commitment to human rights. We are determined to make the point that the government policy needs fundamental reform and Villawood should be closed, not ‘cleaned up’.”

Text of letter to Minister, (sent 4.04pm, 10/4/06):
To Minister for Immigration
Dear Sir/Madam,
We are deeply concerned about unconfirmed information that you and or your department is proceeding to transfer the detainees from VIDC to an unknown location. Given the fact that we consider this exercise is intended to or is planned to be conducted very shortly, without any discussion with us and without any notice. We consider that this exercise is a conspiratorial conduct designed to exacerbate our stress, anxiety and to effectively restrict our communication and our support from the community including the legal support.
We hereby declares that any attempt to our transfer to any other place from VIDC will compel us to go for a hunger strike until death or until we are released from the detention. If you intend to kill us only then proceed with this exercise. Thank you.
Signed

Grave Concern about Forcible Relocations to Baxter |

Monday, 10 April 2006: Greens Express Grave Concern about Forcible Relocations to Baxter
The Victorian Greens Spokesperson on Refugees, Peter Job, expressed grave concern this evening about the forcible transfer of a number asylum seekers from Villlawood to Baxter Detention Centre.
“I have spoken this evening to several who have told me that they are distraught about the prospect of removal to Baxter. While the Minister has indicated that most moves will be temporary while the asbestos is removed, several fear that any move to Baxter may prove permanent, and given DIMA’s track record I fear they could be right. In particular, members of the Chinese community have told me that they fear such a move could cut them off from friends and family in the Sydney community, effectively making the conditions of their detention even more intolerable.
“Given that many have been locked up for more than two years, there is no justification in making their situations even more unbearable, or in treating them in such a heavy handed manner.” Mr. Job said.
“Asylum seekers should be allowed to live in the community while processing takes place,” Mr. Job said, “If not she should at least guarantee allow detainees to chose their location of detention and guarantee that all those relocated will be allowed to return to Villawood if they choose once the asbestos has been cleaned up.”
Mr. Job also expressed concern about DIMA’s failure to consult with detainees in any way concerning their relocation, or even inform them properly of the asbestos problem.
“While the minister mentions a number of authorities she has consulted, she has made absolutely no effort to consult with the detainees themselves. This is indicative of her contempt for their views, and has led to high levels of stress amongst many. One, who had not heard of the asbestos problem, told me he thought it was it was a trick to deport them. While I told him I did not believe this to be the case, given how DIMA and the minister has kept them in the dark it is small wonder they feel this way.
“Above all this proves that mandatory long term detention has failed. It is simply not possible to detain people for the lengths of time they continue to held without causing long term damage to the wellbeing, and seriously damaging their human rights.”
