Statement of the Villawood Hunger Strikers |
| by Chinese hunger strikers in Villawood |
2005-11-01 9:45 PM +0800 |
| Published at the request of the Chinese hunger strikers in Villawood immigration detention centre, Sydney. On hunger strike since 19 October. |
(translated from Chinese)
We are six hunger strikers from Villawood Immigration Detention Centre (VIDC) in Sydney, Australia. In order to protest against the compulsory detention policy and mental and physical impairment caused by the long-term detention in VIDC, during which many people have suffered from long-term insomnia, dysphoria, and even mental breakdown, six of us detainees started the hunger strike on 19th October, 2005.
Six of us all came from the mainland China, among us five people are seeking refugee status while another person is asking for family reunion.
We were persecuted by the communist regime in our own country where people lost their fundamental freedom, human rights, democratic rights and rule of law. We were forced to flee from China to come to Australia where people enjoy their fundamental freedom, human rights, democratic rights and rule of law. Like newly born babies, we are seeking protection here in a democracy. But due to the inadequacy of the detention policy in Australia, we were forced to lose our freedom again and may, at any moment, be deported back to China and face severe persecution again.
Our hearts are bleeding.
Is it that hard for us to live as a normal human being?
Is it that hard for us to be treated like the staying Chinese after the Tiananmen Square Massacre?
Has the communist regime in China returned us the fundamental rights of freedom, human rights and democratic rights?
Has the rule of law become dominant in China now?
Has the Chinese Communist Party stopped persecution against political dissidents, "underground churches" and Falun Gong?
All the above questions explain themselves, and certainly do not need our explanations.
Hereby we solemnly declared that we request the Australian Government to provide us the refugee status, family reunion and humanitarian refuge. It is also the aspirations of all the detainees at the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre, Sydney.
Australian people, we need your help!

12th Day of Villawood Hunger Strike - Failure to Reform say Greens |
| by rfp |
2005-11-03 12:55 PM +0800 |
[Note: now in the 16th day 3nov]
Twelfth Day of Villawood Hunger Strike Underlines Immigration Department’s
Failure to Reform say Greens
The hunger strike of six Chinese detainees in Villawood detention centre, now entering its twelfth day, belied any claims by the Department of Immigration that it had substantially reformed its culture or treatment of detainees, the Victorian Greens Spokesperson on Refugees, Peter Job, said today.
“The six have told me of their utter frustration with a system they feel is grossly unjust, both in its rejection of their strong claims to protection from genuine persecution, and a dehumanising detention system that has robbed them of their freedoms and separated them from their families,” Mr. Job said.
Three had claims based on long term membership of Falun Gong, one on political activism, and one for membership of an unregistered religious group Mr. Job explained. One of the six was asking for family reunion rather than refugee protection. All six had been in Australia substantial lengths of time.
“We must remember that many rejected cases end up being found genuine, many after years of detention,” Mr Job said, “Having failed such an arbitrary and sometimes inept system means nothing.
“It is particularly astonishing that the department has rejected the claims of the Falun Gong members given the strong evidence from United Nations sources of persecution, imprisonment, torture, and even extrajudicial execution of Falun Gong practitioners. This is especially so given that all three joined well before Falun Gong was banned, so there can be no question of surplus claims.”
Mr. Job also raised the issue of family separation, explaining that now the department had been forced at last to release families, it was resorting to detaining only the men.
“One of the six is in this situation, and he is utterly frustrated at his inability to be with or help his wife and children who, having lost all rights to work, are presently existing on charity,” Mr. Job said.
“I should emphasise I have in no way encouraged them in their hunger strike. In fact I did what I could to discourage them from self harm,” Mr. Job said. “The six however are determined, as they feel the Immigration Department is totally intransient and oblivious to their appeals.”
“This situation is proof, once again, that the detention system has utterly failed. All six should be released on bridging visas and the five refugee claims should have their cases reheard under a competent system.”
Mr. Job explained that he had had spoken at length with the six via interpreter, and that the six had also written a statement appealing to the Australian people.
